Book is a Relationship

 About Us

An assorted group of readers, students, teachers, professionals as well as, of course, some jobless youths used to gather in Calicut in 2003. Over many cups of tea, they aired their concern about the scarcity of a book house which would give them books for serious reading. Bookhouses that there were sold books considering the niche readership: university libraries, readers of pop titles, self-help books, cuisine etc. Debates in humanities and science the world over, which an endless series of ‘posts’ (post modernism, post secularism, post orientalism on and on) kept introducing were not known from primary sources. Hence, the formation of Other Books as a distributor in 2003. Since then it has marketed titles of all major publishers, Oxford University Press, Granta Books, CUP, Islamic Text Society, Praeger, Francis and Taylor...etc.

As years went by, Other Books realised the pressing need for chronicling the voices yet unheard. Mappila history, which the publishing giants had hardly taken up; Dalit history and aesthetics, where there were many missing blocs; Islamic studies in the post Islamist and post secular phase, in which no Muslim publishers in India were interested; mystical philosophy and thought, which needs to be salvaged from self-help gurus and popular hullabaloo; gender and sexuality, which craved a Kerala chronicle... Hence, the transformation of Other Books as a publisher in 2007...
